India-Nepal Bus Service - An Initiative to Connect with Cross-Border Countries


Though the news is three months old but the initiative taken is quite refreshing and new to spread transportation facilities to the neighboring countries. The initiative was flagged off by the Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari when the Delhi-Kathmandu bus service green-signaled. The bus was flagged off from the Ambedkar Stadium bus terminal, Delhi.


“The government is planning to start similar services to every neighboring country soon. This initiative by the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to extend good relations between India and Nepal, which has existed since its independence," Gadkari told reporters.

The bus runs on daily basis from Delhi and Kathmandu. The distance of journey is around 1,250 km and it takes around 30 hours to travel the distance. Delhi to Lahore bus service was the first cross border bus service launched in the year 1999. Delhi to Nepal is the second cross-border facilitation launched by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Passengers can travel comfortably in air-conditioned luxury buses that have 2X2 seating arrangement. This bus travels through Yamuna expressway to Agra, Firozabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Sunauli. Then, it enters territory of Nepal to reach Kathmandu.

Global Mega Brands Aiming Indian Bus Market

The declining market of commercial vehicle has not discouraged the flow of investment for the bus segment. It has already created a buzz that Daimler & Volvo– Global Truck Makers are preparing their manufacturing units for the manufacturing of completely-assembled buses for Indian market.
According to Daimler, annually 40,000 buses are required in India. China is in the top list but India is running no lesser as it is expected that the required units will be double in a decade. Daimler in India known as Daimler India Commercial Vehicles that was going through a tough phase as it lacked financially will be able to manufacture bus more effectively with the investment of 425 crore. The German giant will invest for Oragadam, Chennai based bus-making unit.
 The first buses are expected to roll out in the second quarter of 2015 "We will develop a new front-engine school and staff bus in partnership with Wrightbus, said Hartmut Schnick, head of Daimler Buses.”
Due to technological advancement and keeping comfort level of passengers in mind, many auto companies have come forward with luxurious range of buses for long routes."If economic growth gains momentum, there is an inherent potential for long-distance travel. Therefore, there is a need for enhancing capacity on road, said Kumar Kandaswami, manufacturing leader for Deloitte in India. "
India will be introduced with UD bus range that will be aimed for the value market here and to those who can buy high-priced bus tickets. Vovo has already announced for launching value segment buses with its UD brand in India. This project is currently in its inception stage, according to Akash Passey, senior VP, Volvo Bus Corporation, the bus division of Volvo Group.

Ashok Leyland is quite hopeful to Launch ‘Versa’ - an electric bus by 2017 in India

Exploitation of natural resources is at its peak and future generation is expected to see a world where natural resources have already been spent. To restrict the use of natural resources so that it can be used where it is really must and no other possible way is available to provide an option. Hinduja flagship firm Ashok Leyland has started making plans on the launch of a fully electric bus 'Versa' in by 2017 in India.

A Vehicle show organized in Noida showcased the 36-seater bus that can run 90 miles if charged one fully. It emits no gases. It consumes only one unit of electricity to cover one kilometer distance. It does not produce any noise.

"With increased awareness and sensitivity around environment safety and carbon footprints, the timing for the introduction of an electric bus is optimal. Versa is ideally placed to help deliver on our government's commitment to make urban transport efficient and reduce our country's carbon footprint," Venkataraman said.

The government has marked down Rs 1,000 crore for the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan for the next two financial years to boost electric vehicles sales in the country.

"Depending upon the regulations, we expect to launch this vehicle in the country in the next two years. The company is one of the largest providers of electric and hybrid buses in the world and this electric vehicle would help India move up the path of "efficient, comfortable, responsible and sustainable urban transport," Ashok Leyland Vice President, Buses, T Venkataraman.
